How to verify your Google Business Profile

Phone, email, postcard, or video call — how each Google Business Profile verification method works, what makes them fail, and what to do if yours is stuck.

How to verify your Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile that isn't verified is mostly invisible. It won't show in the local map pack, it usually won't show in regular Maps results, and anyone who finds it by searching your exact business name sees a listing with no map pin and no "call" or "directions" button. Verification is the one step between having filled in a form and actually having a working listing.

The verification methods Google offers

Google doesn't let you pick freely from a menu — it decides which options to show you based on your business type, category, and the data it already has. The methods in circulation today are:

  • Phone or SMS — a code sent to the business phone number on file, entered back into the profile. Fastest when it's offered.
  • Email — a code sent to a business email address, mostly offered to businesses Google already has some signal on.
  • Postcard by mail — a physical card sent to the business address with a code inside. The default for most brand-new storefronts and service-area businesses.
  • Live video call — a short call with a Google representative who asks you to show signage, ID, or other proof on camera.

If you manage ten or more locations under one account, bulk verification exists as a separate process reviewed by Google's team, typically taking about a week.

Postcard verification, step by step

This is still the most common route for a new listing, so it's worth knowing exactly how it behaves:

  • The card usually arrives in 5–14 days depending on your postal service.
  • The code on it expires 30 days after Google generates it — request it close to when you'll actually check your mail, not weeks in advance.
  • You enter the code back on the same profile you requested it from, under Business Profile settings.
  • Google's own review after you enter the code can take up to five more business days before the profile goes live.

One detail that catches people out: don't edit your business name, address, or category while a postcard is in transit. Changing the underlying details after the code was generated is a common reason the code stops working when it arrives.

What makes verification fail

There's no official published list, but a few patterns show up consistently in businesses that get stuck:

  • Your name, address, or phone number don't match what's already on record elsewhere (your website, other directories, your business registration).
  • You've listed a PO box or a virtual office as your address rather than a real, staffed location.
  • You edited the profile after requesting a code, which can invalidate it.
  • Repeated failed attempts, which can trigger a manual review hold rather than an automatic retry.

If any of this applies, fix the underlying mismatch first — matching name, address and phone everywhere your business appears — before requesting another code. See what actually needs to be in a Google Business Profile for what "matching" should look like.

If verification is stuck or delayed

Past the expected window, the options are: request a new postcard if the old code expired, check whether Google now offers a faster method (this can change once some profile data is in place), or contact Business Profile support directly through the help section of your profile. Support can sometimes switch you to phone or video verification if postcard delivery is clearly the bottleneck.

Questions people ask

Can I skip verification entirely? No. An unverified profile can be edited by anyone, including competitors, and Google won't show it prominently in Search or Maps.

Can I verify without a physical storefront? Service-area businesses without a public-facing address can still verify — you'll typically be asked for the address you operate from privately, which stays hidden from the public profile.

What happens to my profile while it's unverified? It exists and you can still fill it in, but it carries a visible "unclaimed" or unverified status and won't rank the way a verified one does.

Does verification affect my Google reviews? No — reviews attach to the profile itself and aren't affected by verification status either way.

Once you're verified

Verification is also the point where your profile becomes something worth building on. Everything you've filled in — hours, services, photos — is now a real, trusted source of content, not just a form. That's the exact data Pagebuilder reads to generate a full website, with designs built for how local businesses actually present themselves. If your listing is verified and you're deciding what to do about a website next, see whether you need one at all, or connect your profile and see a draft in under a minute.
